OverviewThe Northern Border Prosecution Initiative (NBPI) provides funds to eligible jurisdictions in the fourteen northern border states, using a uniform payment-per-case basis for qualifying federally initiated and declined-referred criminal cases that were disposed of after October 1, 2005. Eligible jurisdictions include the county governments and the fourteen state governments in Alaska, Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.Use of FundsWhile reimbursements from NBPI federal payments may be used by applicant jurisdictions for any purpose not otherwise prohibited by federal law, using funds for the support and enhancement of additional prosecutorial and detention services is encouraged.Further InformationAccess the NBPI website for further information and guidance.

Eligible county and state governments register and apply on-line through the NBPI website. Once an award has been made for an applicant jurisdiction the jurisdiction may request payment through their on-line account. Awards will be deposited directly to the jurisdiction's bank account once the payment request has been approved by BJA. All electronic transactions and information are secure, using the latest Internet encryption technology.
